Upper Heyford — 68-0040 in service

F-111E 68-0040 is shown complete and operational at Upper Heyford, wearing its European camouflage and carrying underwing stores. This is the strongest opening photograph because it immediately establishes the aircraft in service.

Cannon — grey-era markings

The aircraft appears later in its grey Cannon-era markings on the flight line. This image bridges 68-0040's service history from Upper Heyford to its final American assignment.

Squadron identity — nose art and crew panel

A close view captures the distinctive nose art, visible aircraft number and crew-name panel. It gives 68-0040 a personal identity beyond its serial number.

Flight crew — beneath the canopy

Two aircrew stand with their helmets beneath the open canopy of the F-111. Including the people who operated the aircraft adds an important human element to its story.

Crew saved — newspaper report

This contemporary newspaper report records how the F-111 escape capsule carried the crew to safety. It marks the dramatic turning point between the aircraft's operational life and the preservation story that followed.

Capsule landing — module after escape

The damaged crew module rests on the ground after performing the job it was designed to do. The visible landing bags and impact damage show the violence of the escape while demonstrating the capsule's effectiveness.

Crash site — aerial view

An aerial view of the crash site documents the scale and location of the incident. The photograph provides essential context for understanding the sequence of events that led to the crew module's recovery.

Press coverage — escape capsule

Further press coverage documents public and media interest in the F-111's unique escape capsule system. The crew module's ability to save lives in a catastrophic failure made it a subject of significant attention.

Module recovered — on trailer before restoration

The surviving crew module sits on a trailer before restoration, with its canopy closed and exterior showing years of exposure. This photograph begins the module's journey from recovered airframe section to preservation project.

Original cockpit — starting condition

The cockpit is revealed in a dusty and incomplete condition, but many original instruments, panels and controls remain visible. It provides an invaluable record of the starting point before major dismantling and restoration.

Careful lifting — moving the capsule

The crew module hangs from chains during a careful lifting operation. The image demonstrates both the physical scale of the capsule and the practical challenges involved in moving and preserving it.

Restoration begins — stripped interior

With the cockpit equipment removed, the capsule's internal frames, mounting points and structural members are exposed. The stripped interior reveals the enormous amount of rebuilding required before the instruments could return.

Export ready — module on transport frame

The repaired and repainted module sits on its transport frame with the canopy doors raised. Its restored exterior now resembles an F-111 crew module again and is ready for the next stage of the journey.

Exterior restored — rear three-quarter view

This rear three-quarter view shows the renewed skin, canopy structure, underside and surrounding fairings. It complements the forward view while documenting areas normally hidden in conventional cockpit photographs.

Ocean crossing — secured in container

Wrapped for protection, the crew module is secured to a custom timber base inside its shipping container. This image records the international journey that carried the project toward its new life in Australia.

Parts gathered — components before reassembly

Original instruments, controls, panels and fittings are laid out in front of the open crew module before reassembly. The volume and variety of components illustrate the extraordinary complexity of rebuilding an authentic F-111 cockpit.

Bare structure — stripped for reassembly

The cockpit has again been stripped to its frames and mounting structures in preparation for careful reassembly. This clear before view makes the transformation shown in the following photographs much more powerful.

Panel preparation — instruments on workbench

The main instrument panel is arranged on the workbench with gauges, openings and surrounding components visible. Each item had to be identified, checked and correctly positioned before returning to the cockpit.

Systems returning — reassembly in progress

Seats, rear equipment and restored internal structures are returning to their original positions. The capsule is beginning to look like an operational F-111 cockpit rather than an empty airframe shell.

Module reassembled — F-111 shape returned

The reassembled crew module stands in the workshop with its canopy doors raised and major exterior sections fitted. Its unmistakable F-111 shape has finally returned.

Cockpit reborn — restoration complete

The restored cockpit is once again filled with original instruments, controls, panels and distinctive F-111 hardware. This final image represents the culmination of the restoration so far and the foundation for its future as a working simulator.
